Other names: Miracle Berry, Miraculous Berry, Sweet Berry
Origin: Tropical west Africa.
Tree Height: 20 ft.
Season: May-October
Cold Hardiness: 32°F
Fruit Description: The oval-shaped fruits taper to a slight point and are 3/4-1 in. long. They ripen from green to bright red and are usually harvested with their coarse stem and calyx intact. The inner translucent flesh surrounds a single seed, and is mildly sweet but virtually tasteless.
More Info: This is a plant known for its berry that, when the fleshy part of the fruit is eaten, the glycoprotein molecule binds to the tongue's taste buds, causing sour foods (such as lemons and limes) subsequently consumed to taste sweet. This effect lasts until the protein is washed away by saliva (up to about 30 minutes). Mostly a novelty item, Miracle berries have been purchased in order to host tasting parties during which participants eat a berry, and then taste a variety of tart and astringent foods. The Miracle berry has also had some unique successes in the medical field after recent experimentation with diabetes and cancer treatment.
