Fruit Description: Small to medium in size with an oblong, oval, to pyriform shape. Typically consists of 2-4 closed lobes, forming vertical indentations along the surface, giving the fruit a curved, bulbous appearance. Skin or pod is textured and ripens from green to bright red or orange-yellow as it matures. When ripe, the lobes will also split apart, revealing red-pink membranes with multiple glossy, black seeds attached to pale arils.
More Info: Belongs to the same family as lychee and longan. Being the national fruit of Jamaica, Jamaicans will often say that the fruit will “yawn” or “smile”—open naturally, on its own—before it's ready to be picked from the tree. Although having a long-held reputation as being poisonous with potential fatalities, the fruit are renowned as delicious when ripe and properly prepared and cooked.
